Doug Thurston: Faces Behind the Races

Doug Thurston, Executive Director & Race Director of the Big Sur Marathon Foundation.

Doug became the race and executive director of the Big Sur Marathon, a bucket-list event for marathoners around the world, in March of 2013. The organization is a $3.5-million non-profit that produces four major event weekends and an award-winning youth fitness program (Just Run!).

Doug’s been a Full-Time race director and running journalist since 1984 (34 years), and has directed and consulted with marathons and other large races in Tulsa, Oklahoma; Columbus, Ohio; Detroit, Michigan; Sacramento, Calif.; Madison, Wisconsin, and many races in California. Including, Race director for the 1992 U.S. Men’s Olympic Marathon Trials in Columbus, Ohio.

Former Vice President of Course Operations and Community Development for Competitor Group in San Diego, Calif., the largest organizer of marathons and half marathons in the world, helping layout, design, measure, and coordinate Rock ‘n’ Roll marathons and half marathons in San Diego, Savannah, New Orleans, San Antonio, Miami Beach, Providence, Virginia Beach, and many other RnR markets.

Doug is also an athlete in his own right, as a finisher of more than 600 road races including 25 marathons
